Part 1
Eight year-end tax strategies to review.
Mark each item Yes, No, or Not sure. Every No or Not sure is a question worth raising before December 31 — many tax strategies count for the year only if they are in place by December 31. Rules and limits change each year, so treat the timing notes as a guide and confirm current law before acting.
1. Owner retirement contributions
Are you putting the maximum allowed into a retirement plan for yourself? Many plans must be set up by December 31, though some contributions can be made later.
2. Cash balance or defined-benefit plan
Do steady profits justify saving more than a 401(k) allows? These plans need actuarial design and are usually adopted before year end.
3. Equipment and vehicle purchases
Do you understand the bonus depreciation and §179 treatment for planned purchases? Property generally must be placed in service by December 31, not merely ordered.
4. Entity structure
Is your LLC, S corporation, or C corporation still the right fit for your profit level? Some changes take time, and S corporation elections have deadlines.
5. Owner pay and payroll
As an S corporation owner, is your salary reasonable and your payroll current? Year-end is the time to adjust compensation and address payroll issues.
6. Pass-through deductions and state taxes
Are you using the qualified business income deduction, and could income in other states benefit from an entity-level tax election? Eligibility depends on income, business type, and state rules.
7. Income and expense timing
Would moving income or expenses into or out of this year leave you better off? It depends on your accounting method and next-year expectations.
8. Estimated payments and books
Are estimated payments on track and books reconciled through October? Clean books show real profit and help avoid underpayment penalties.
Part 2
Business value scorecard.
Four risks lower what a buyer will pay. Score each from 1 (high risk) to 5 (low risk).
Owner dependence
Could the business run well for 30 days without you?
1 = Nothing works without me.5 = It runs smoothly without me.
Customer concentration
Does any one customer make up a large share of revenue, such as 20% or more?
1 = One or two customers drive most of it.5 = Revenue spread across many customers.
Financial reporting quality
Do you receive accurate monthly statements within about 15 days of month end?
1 = Statements late or unreliable.5 = Accurate and on time every month.
Operational efficiency
Are core processes written down so someone else can run them?
1 = They live in people’s heads.5 = Documented and followed.
